What is the difference between a consultation and an instruction?

At Dos, we aim to bring transparency to hiring a lawyer. This guide explains the typical process when hiring a lawyer:

1. Consultation

Lawyers typically charge a fee of around £100 (+ VAT if applicable) for a 60-minute consultation. This consultation aims to determine the full facts of your case. This will typically involve meeting with you to:

• Review the facts of your particular circumstances
• Advise you on how best to proceed regarding your immigration status in the UK or the options available to you

2. Instruction

During the consultation, the lawyer should have determined the best way to solve your case and your chances of success. They should have given a complete estimate before you agree to instruct them. If you want them to apply for you, it moves to the instruction phase, where they work on your application to solve the case.
