British citizenship can be acquired in different ways—by birth, descent, registration, or naturalisation. The most common route is naturalisation, which requires applicants to:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Have Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), permanent residence, or EU Settled Status for at least 12 months (if married to a British citizen, you can apply immediately after obtaining ILR)
- Meet residency requirements
- Demonstrate English proficiency and pass the Life in the UK test
- Have a good character record
Other Routes to British Citizenship:
- By Birth: If born in the UK on or after 1 January 1983, you are automatically British if at least one parent was a British citizen or had settled status.
- By Descent: If born abroad, you may qualify if a parent was British, though this status cannot always be passed to your own children.
- By Registration: Some individuals, including children who later gain an entitlement, may apply for citizenship via registration.
- By Marriage: If you are married to a British citizen, you must have lived in the UK for three years and hold ILR or settled status.
